Lighthouse Visitor Centre


At the north of the island beside the tallest land based lighthouse in the UK is the Lighthouse Visitor Centre and Lighthouse Cafe, Licensed and serving a range of food with very much a local flavour.Seating both inside and out, with beautiful view North towards Fair Isle and north. The Visitor Centre contains a gift shop with many lighthouse and local roduced gifts. 

Interpretation centres covering Island Life, and Lighthouses.

North Ronaldsay Bird Observatory 

Situated at the south of the island looking back towards the islands of Sanday and Eday the Bird Observatory is an island hub offering Accommodation, Restaurant, Licenced Bar, Cafe, Community Shop, plus the centre for ornithology and wildlife on the island.

North Ronaldsay Community School

The Community School has welcomed three new pupils who started in March 2021.  With Helga Scott being appointed as school teacher, a role which she has held previously, and which in between Helga also was working for the North Ronaldsay Trust as Community Development Manager for the island.



The school is considered a satellite of Burray Primary School with the head Teacher being Mr Steve Arnold.  Following travel restrictions there will be travel both ways for both Burray and North Ronaldsay pupils to enjoy concerts, sport, and cultural visits. 

North Ronaldsay Science Festival

The second North Ronaldsay Science Week Festival was held at the beginning of March.  This year though it was an online festival with seventeen videos made especially for the festival by people in North Ronaldsay, Orkney mainland, Scotland, Denmark, Iceland, and the USA. The topics, all based around the theme of 'innovation', range from the use of seaweed on North Ronaldsay to Malagan figures brought to Orkney in the 1920's by a North Ronaldsay man, John Muir.
